Tom Allen has said the contestants on The Apprentice are ‘devastated’ after fellow competitor Shama Amin had to quit the show for health reasons.

The comedian, who hosts the spin-off show The Apprentice: You’re Fired, said Shama is a ‘clever’ and ‘lovely’ person who he thought would have gone a long way in the competition.

It was revealed that the 41-year-old children’s day nursery owner left the BBC One series as she has rheumatoid arthritis and the show became too ‘physically demanding’ for her.

Speaking on Tuesday’s episode of The One Show, Tom said: ‘It’s so sad because she’s absolutely brilliant and such a clever person and such a lovely person.

‘And I know all the candidates were really devastated that she had to leave the process early.’

He added: ‘She would have gone a long way in the competition actually. I’m sure she’ll go on to great things.’

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints and usually affects the hands, feet and wrists.

Amin’s departure leaves 13 entrepreneurs in the running to win £250,000 worth of investment in their business and become Lord Sugar’s next business partner.

The girls’ team has won the past two weeks of challenges, which saw contestants tasked with designing an advertising campaign for a cruise and then creating a children’s toothbrush.

Speaking about the performance of the boys’ team, Tom admitted he thinks they are ‘either too quiet or they’re too loud’.

‘Either way they don’t listen to each other very much. I think it’s always about communication with the boys’ team.

‘It’s often the boys’ teams early on that let themselves down. Silly boys in their lovely suits but they talk too much and they don’t listen to each other and they come up with some truly dreadful products.’

Shama’s departure is set to be addressed in Thursday’s episode of The Apprentice, where she tells Lord Alan Sugar that she will be leaving the programme due to her medical condition.

In the upcoming episode, the mum-of-five tells the Amstrad mogul: ‘I would just like to say something, Lord Sugar, if that’s OK. I suffer from a condition called rheumatoid arthritis.

‘Because of medical reasons, due to this process being so physically demanding, despite the efforts the whole team has made to support me, I’ve had to make a difficult decision to leave the process.’

The owner of a children’s day nursery, Shama has been in the winning team for both tasks she participated in.

Ahead of her appearance on the show, she said: ‘Being a lady of colour, wearing a headscarf as well, and the challenges that we face on a daily basis, I just want to be a living example for the Asian women and South Asian women out there.’

The last candidate to be fired by the businessman was Conor Gilsenan, after the teams were tasked with creating an electric toothbrush aimed at children aged six to eight.

The boys’ team failed to secure any orders for their magic wand themed toothbrush, while the girls’ team landed 11,000 orders from various retailers.

After Conor went against the project manager’s wishes of making the toothbrush gender neutral, he was given the boot.

However, his firing was controversial, with some viewers believing the wrong candidate was chosen.

The next episode of the show will see the teams tasked with making non-alcoholic drinks.

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
