Matty Healy may be a famous pop musician, but his mother, Denise Welch, recalls him as a child who had a habit of upsetting her.
On Thursday’s episode of Loose Women, the panel discussed whether children should ever address their parents by their first names.
Charlene White said it’s something she could never do in her family, while Linda Robson claimed it’s a term of endearment from her children.
Denise described how being called “mom” makes her happy and cherished by her two children, Matty, 34, and Louis, 22.
She did, however, recollect Matty, who is now the lead vocalist of the band The 1975, terrorising her by addressing her by her first name.
‘When Matty was about three and he obviously thought it was clever, he started calling me Denise,’ the 65-year-old explained.
She continued: ‘And I said: “Why are you calling me that?” so he obviously saw that it was winding me up – and he used to have a lisp – so he started to do it on purpose.
‘So he’d go, “Can I have some juice, Denise,” like that, and then I’d go, “Off you go to bed,” and he’d go, “I’m not going, Denise.”‘
Denise replicated a strong lisp, notably on her name, implying that her son may have emphasised the speech impairment on purpose to irritate her.
The mum-of-two continued: ‘And it went on for about a year and Tim [Healy] kept saying because you’re getting cross with him about it, he’s just thoroughly enjoying it.
‘He used to shout down the stairs going “Denise”.’
She can see the humour now, but the habit used to drive her insane.
Denise, on the other hand, had the final laugh, saying that producers wanted Matty to videotape it for the programme.
‘The producers asked me if I’d ring him and ask him to put that on audio and I thought I don’t think that’s quite the image he’s looking for at the moment,’ she joked.
Denise, a proud mother, is occasionally spotted at her son’s concerts and even had a sweet backstage photo with Taylor Swift when she joined The 1975 for a show.
Taylor was briefly romantically linked to the British artist while on her massive stadium tour throughout the United States, but the affair has since ended.
Matty was recently called out at Glastonbury by artist Rina Sawayama for statements he made on a podcast that were labelled “racist, sexist, and dumb,” and he also claimed ownership of her works.
The 1975 did not perform at Glasto this year, but Rina did appear on stage with Sir Elton John for his legendary closing act.
