Tess Daly has admitted she sobbed watching her husband Vernon Kay suffer while he took part in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!
Verno, 47, notably came in third place in this year’s series of the ITV reality show – the first to be filmed in Gwrych Castle, Wales – and his wife has revealed that she could sympathise with him whenever he was struggling on screen.
Speaking to The Sun, Tess explained: ‘Every time he welled up on the TV, I would find myself welling up because I felt like I was going through it with him.
‘I mean I was fed and never cold – but he slept on the floor for two and a half weeks, which the edit didn’t show, because he didn’t fit in the beds.
‘So whenever he welled up, I felt like I was going through it with him.’
The couple were separated from each other for five weeks while Vernon competed in the series, and during his time on the show, he would usually refer to their children – Phoebe, 16, and Amber, 11.
Tess continued: ‘Often he would refer to the girls and I would look across to our 16-year-old Phoebe, who is a teenager and doesn’t show that much emotion when it comes to her parents.
‘But there was a moment between us where we acknowledged the fact that we were really proud of him.
‘Then when we did a little message to me in the telegraph, I was like, “Oh God” – I had to leave the room quickly so the teenager couldn’t see me cry.’
The Strictly Come Dancing host added that the time she and her husband spent away from each other helped to ‘bring us closer’.
Tess previously revealed that she had nightmares about doing I’m A Celebrity’s infamous trials while Vernon was in the castle.
She told Metro newspaper for Sixty Seconds: ‘I’d been barely sleeping because I was so into it, I woke up dreaming that I was doing trials. I’ve laughed, cried and heaved with them.’
However, the star doesn’t think she’d ‘last two minutes’ doing the gruesome trials – which often involve fish guts and plenty of bugs.
‘Hooves and giblets dropped on your head? How could you cope?’ she said. ‘And all those creepy crawlies, I’m just so squeamish.
‘I wouldn’t last two minutes. Hats off to them.’
