*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Swarm*
A actress of the Amazon Prime thriller Swarm, Dominique Fishback, has revealed that she felt “so emotionally and mentally drained” during filming the series and that she requested the services of a doctor.
The Childish Gambino actor Donald Glover is the brains behind the thriller, which follows her character Dre as she goes on a murdering spree throughout the United States after getting fascinated with a made-up popstar.
Due to the sensitive nature of the subject matter, the 32-year-old actor asked that a therapist be brought in “not just for me, but also for the other actors who could potentially be triggered, as well as for the crew.”
She went on to say that she had made a request for a therapist to be present on the set. Not just for myself, but also for the other performers who could get affected, as well as for the others working on the set.’
The actress who appears in Judas and the Black Messiah referred to the seventh episode as being “very disturbing for me,” particularly because it is the one in which her character is responsible for the death of her partner Rashida. (Kiersey Clemons).
She told The Hollywood Reporter: ‘Why? Well, for one, Dre loved her. Dre didn’t love those other people she killed. And the killing was more intimate; she literally killed her with her bare hands.’
Dominque continued: ‘And after that scene, when I went home, I was so emotionally and mentally drained, I could not stay awake. It was so hard to stay awake.
‘The therapist was on set on that day. I definitely cried after that scene, and I took some time to talk to her.’
On film and television sets, there has been a growing demand for improved mental health care, and Ita O’Brien, who was a pioneer in the field of intimacy coordinators, is seeing her role expand.
Intimacy coordinators have been praised by Dame Emma Thompson in the past for being “absolutely essential.”
The 63-year-old explained: ‘I think if you’re a young woman on a set, which is largely peopled by men, the crew will be 90% men and the women won’t be on the set with you.’
She continued: ‘It is absolutely essential that there is someone there to protect [young women] in the industry.’
Swarm also includes a surprise cameo by music superstar Billie Eilish, 21, in her debut acting role.
Swarm is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
