Susanna Reid became extremely emotional on Tuesday’s Good Morning Britain as she spoke to two men closely connected to the Grenfell Tower tragedy, as it marks its fifth anniversary.
Susanna returned to present GMB with Richard Madeley, and the hosts welcomed pair David Badillo and Manny Ruiz onto the programme, whose lives were deeply impacted by the Grenfell Tower fire.
David was the first firefighter onto the scene, while Manny lost his 12-year-old niece Jessie in the tragedy.
The men have since become friends, and it was Jessie who was one of the people David was tasked with trying to get out of the burning building on the night.
However, while she was expected to be on the 20th floor, the young girl went towards the top of the building to try and escape the flames, resulting in her being trapped inside.
As the pair bravely spoke about the impact of the blaze, Susanna commended them both on being able to speak with ‘such courage’ as she became choked up.
Recalling how emotional she found it even just to report on, the presenter said: ‘ I can see how hard it is to hear… it’s hard for me and all I did was report on it here in the studio.’
Susanna continued: ‘I can’t imagine how hard it is for you to listen, I know you’re friends you and David, and David at the time, you didn’t realise you were looking for your friend’s niece
But to find out someone was in the building trying to get Jessica back and she’d done what she thought was the safe thing to do, meant she was getting further into danger. It’s just hideous.
The host went on to call the pair ‘remarkable’ for being able to speak with ‘such courage’ about the tragedy.
‘I admire you both for it,’ she told them.
‘We are so grateful that you’re able to talk about it, it is so important.’
