Jesse Armstrong, the show’s successor, has spoken out regarding the possibilities of spin-offs when the fourth and final season airs.
The gritty HBO drama, which follows the cunning Roy brothers and their struggle to take over their father Logan’s (Brian Cox) company, returns for its fourth season on Sunday night.
With the season three cliffhanger, which saw Roman (Kieran Culkin), Shiv (Sarah Snook), and Kendall (Jeremy Strong) caught off guard after an effort to take Logan down, all eyes will be on who succeeds to wrest control of Waystar Royco.
Is it now Cousin Greg’s day to shine?
With the conclusion in sight, it’s natural for speculation to shift to which member of the family would get the spin-off treatment.
In an interview with Deadline, programme creator Jesse advised fans not to get their hopes up about individual characters having their own shows.
When asked if any character could front their own program, he said: ‘I think it would be a fun parlor game that I would do with my pals, but I wouldn’t say it publicly, because it might get misconstrued.
‘I’d write for all of them, but I don’t think any of them are ripe for an actual TV spinoff.’
Jesse also discussed his intention to terminate Succession permanently after the next season, saying that potential additions ‘didn’t feel right’.
‘The biggest challenge, once we decided that this was it, then you’re writing toward an end point. I knew what the end was, and therefore most of those challenges have gone,’ he added to the publication.
‘You have to try to make things feel true and satisfying, and you do start running out of road. Not every story runs at the same pace.
‘There’s some juggling to be done to make sure you feel everything is satisfying.’
Jesse announced the program’s demise in February, leaving us all sad.
Sarah, who portrays Shiv Roy, expressed dissatisfaction that the new episodes were not announced sooner.
‘I was very upset,’ the expectant mom told Los Angeles Times upon learning that the Roys were bowing out after season four.
‘I felt a huge sense of loss, disappointment, sadness. It would’ve been nice to know at the beginning of the season, but I also understand not being told until the end because there was still a potential that maybe this wasn’t going to be the end.
‘Emotionally, all of us weren’t necessarily ready to be done with the show because we love each other so much.
‘But everything has to come to an end, and it’s smart not to let something become a parody of itself.’
Succession returns to HBO Max in the US on March 26 and will land on and NOW in the UK the following day.
