Strictly Come Dancing head judge Shirley Ballas has revealed that the stars of the show are banned from clapping when Rose Ayling-Ellis performs.

In one of the steps to make the dancefloor more accessible to Rose, who is deaf, contestants and dancers have been asked not to applaud when the EastEnders actress performs in order for her to ‘feel the vibrations’ of the music.

Rose and her professional partner Giovanni Pernice made a hugely promising start to the series, scoring a perfect 40 out of 40 during Saturday’s Halloween-themed special.

Shirley explained during today’s Good Morning Britain how the rule helps Rose as her other senses are ‘really heightened’.

‘Nobody’s allowed to clap whilst she’s dancing so she can feel the vibrations of the floor,’ the head judge revealed.

‘So the music’s just a hair louder. She’s got that beautiful feelings of vibrations, so her other senses are really really heightened.’

Shirley was also full of praise for Giovanni and his ‘immaculate job’ of training Rose.

‘I think Giovanni, first of all, has done an absolutely immaculate job. We have a translator just off to our left that’s helping her understand what’s going on and the criticisms and the critiques,’ she said.

It comes after Giovanni celebrated his history-making perfect score with Rose from Saturday night’s show, dubbing it ‘one of the most rewarding moments of my career’.
