During a recent appearance on Steph’s Packed Lunch, Johannes joined his Strictly partner John Whaite on the show. While speaking to John and host Steph McGovern, Johannes opened up about his experiences with the police, saying that he’s ‘going to stop wearing a cap and a black leather jacket’, because of police officers ‘stopping’ him. ‘I say that because I get stopped all the time, and then it’s like “oh ok sorry, it’s not you”…’ he said. When asked by Steph who he is stopped by, the dancer replied: ‘Police,’ as those in the studio reacted with shock. ‘I’m tall, I’m Black. It’s important where you are and where you hang around and what you do,’ he said. Johannes stressed that his experience is a reality for ‘many people’ (Credits: Emily Manley/Channel 4) Steph asked Johannes how he feels when he is stopped by police, to which he replied: ‘It’s terrible, it really is terrible.’ Johannes stressed that where he comes from in South Africa, ‘you don’t get to experience it often’, as the majority of the population is Black. ‘You go to places and you travel the world and that’s always the case. It’s just like, I have to be careful of how I dress. That’s my reality,’ he stated. Johannes said he’s selective about clothes he wears to ‘look more civilised’ (Picture: Keiron McCarron/BBC) Former Great British Bake Off champion John shook his head with anger over Johannes as he reacted to his partner’s experiences. Steph then questioned whether Johannes has changed the way he dresses as a result of the way he is treated by police. ‘I do, yes definitely, when I go out, I do try and look more “civilised” so to speak,’ he replied, adding that it’s ‘a reality for many people’. According to figures released in October 2020, Black people in England and Wales are nine times more likely than white people to face stop-and-search by police. This weekend, Johannes became overwhelmed with emotion when discussing his partnership with John on Strictly, tearing up as he said: ‘I can’t tell you how happy I am with this partnership.’ For Halloween Week coming up this Saturday, Johannes and John are going to deliver the spookiness with their Quickstep, dancing to Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
