If you’re having a bit of a rubbish day, just be thankful you aren’t forking out for Homer Simpson’s medical bills.
Now, he isn’t exactly the poster guy for health and safety, however, a study has shown just how much he’s racked up in hospital bills over the years and, well, it’s a lot.
Accident and injury law group Downtown LA Law Group has discovered that Homer’s antics over the years would equal a total of $143 million (£108.12m) in medical costs.
Homer’s done a lot of things that can cause harm to the human body and when you read the list of things he’d be paying for, it’s amazing he’s still going!
Unsurprisingly, brain damage is the most pricey item on Homer’s bill, costing a whopping $1,525,500 (£1,153,331).
Paralysis bags second place, costing Homer an estimated $508,904 (£384,749) followed by radiation exposure at $150,000 (£113,405).
But it doesn’t stop there, as skull fracture costs $100,000 (£75,592) and loss of consciousness, $80,000, (£60,474) rounded out the top five.
To compile the list, Downtown L.A. Law Group looked at 50 memorable incidents from the show’s 706 episodes across 31 seasons.
They found that the total of Homer’s medical bills amounts to a staggering 443 times more than the average American.
Their survey found that the most common injury Homer sustained was falls – which he is often seen taking either down his staircase, into the road or just as a result of general clumsiness.
On 10 occasions from the 50, Homer broke numerous bones, which would cost him an estimated $48,000 (£36,293) each time – a price tag that almost hurts as much as any injury.

In case you were wondering what Homer’s other accidents were, they included animal attacks and food poisoning.
The law group calculated the prices as if Homer didn’t have medical insurance and Downtown L.A. points out that under the US’ Affordable Care Act, health insurance companies can’t refuse coverage or charge more because of serious pre-existing conditions.
Farid Yaghoubtil, senior trial attorney at Downtown L.A, shared the important message behind what might seem like light-hearted research: ‘We carried out this research to hopefully share the importance of having adequate medical insurance as the costs for injuries can be extremely high.
‘Whilst Homer Simpson is a fictional character, his injuries are very real, and examples of incidents that many people are entitled to compensation for.’
‘We hope this medical bill rap sheet encourages anyone who is considering it, to get health insurance and avoid paying the price,’ he added
The Simpsons first hit screens in December 1989 and has been running ever since, making it the longest-running American animated series.
