Iolo Williams has alarmed supporters by announcing he will not conduct the next season of the nature programme Springwatch due to health concerns.

The 60-year-old TV host and author, who has co-hosted Springwatch with Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan since the beginning of 2019, announced the news on Friday.

Iolo updated his 87,000 followers on why he will not be appearing on Springwatch 2023 by sharing a photo of himself from the hospital.

He said: ‘Unfortunately, I can’t co-present Springwatch this year. I had a stent inserted in April, which released a clot, that, this week, caused an embolism!’

Referencing the author Mark Twain, Iolo then said: ‘My demise has been greatly exaggerated; thanks to brilliant friends, wonderful family & the excellent NHS.

The new season of Springwatch, which has aired on the BBC for nearly two decades since its debut in 2005, premieres on Monday, May 29.

After paying tribute to the NHS, he thanked the entire Springwatch team, in particular the new presenter Megan McCubbin.

In response, Springwatch supporters were quick to send get well soon messages, and Iolo’s Twitter feed quickly filled up with well-wishers.

Megan, co-host of Springwatch and stepdaughter of Chris Packham, said, ‘Get well soon and get some rest! I’ll do my best on the programme, but please return quickly.’

His wife, Ceri, and he have two children.

In addition to messages wishing him a rapid recovery, Iolo received dozens of spring 2023 photographs taken by his followers.

Michaela, 57, the co-host of Iolo, admitted on Friday that she only showers once every three days since residing in Cape Town, South Africa during the 2018 drought.

‘I went through a country with major, major droughts, and we so we learned to only have a shower every three days. I’m not fastidious about washing hands.’

She then went on to say, ‘We’re way too clean, all of us,’ which was greeted with shock on the Loose Women panel.
