He’s back on the streets of New York as Peter Parker, he’s taken the musical world by storm in tick, tick…BOOM!… and now, Andrew Garfield has revealed he’s up for Strictly Come Dancing.
On Friday’s episode of The Graham Norton Show, the Spider-Man: No Way Home star opened up to the talk show host about how he felt being nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Jonathan Larson, the brains behind the iconic musical Rent.
While Andrew shared how ‘wonderful’ it was to be recognised alongside his fellow Academy Award nominees, he also revealed that if he wins, he might end up going for a spin on the Strictly dancefloor.
When asked whether he would be up for doing a stage musical, the 38-year-old said that while he would ‘love to’, ‘you need to be a thoroughbred’, adding: ‘I have the deepest respect for those performers’.
The actor continued, saying: ‘I hate to confess it, but I would absolutely love to do Strictly. It’s on the bucket list,’ before adding, possibly in a joking manner: ‘If I win the Oscar I will come back and do it!’
He might have said it in jest… but we’re holding you to that Andrew!
The Social Network star explained that when he found out he had been nominated for an Oscar for a second time – having received his first nomination in 2017 for Hacksaw Ridge – he thought to himself: ‘Gosh, this would be nice if it happened and I kind of owned it for the first time in my life.’
‘You get to a certain age, and you think you would like it to happen,’ he added. ‘I do care, and it’s wonderful, really, really lovely.’
Marvel fans were over the moon when Andrew reprised his role as Spider-Man in No Way Home, having portrayed the superhero in the 2012 film The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel.
He told Graham that it was a ‘stupid thing to do and a really scary thing to attempt especially in that costume’, saying: ‘A 38-year-old should not be in Spandex!’
‘I’m far too old to be playing Spiderman but they asked me back, which was the sweetest thing ever,’ he said.
During a recent interview with Metro.co.uk, Daredevil star Charlie Cox – who also appeared in No Way Home – recollected meeting up with his old friend Andrew in Atlanta while they were filming.
However, after heading for a restaurant for lunch, they both realised that if they were spotted by photographers, it could give away that they were in the movie together.
‘When we were in the restaurant, it suddenly occurred to us that if we were photographed together in the restaurant in Atlanta… not a good look. Not a good look for our promise to keep it secret,’ Charlie said.
‘So we actually both sat facing a wall, which is quite funny.’
The Graham Norton Show airs tomorrow at 10.35pm on BBC One.
