Simon Cowell struggled to talk at the final of Britain’s Got Talent on Sunday night.
After Amy Lou Smith sang an emotive rendition of Christina Aguilera’s ballad Reflection from the Disney film Mulan, the show’s founder and talent judge went up to provide remarks first.
Amy Lou, 34, a sunbed receptionist who was pregnant on her first audition, wowed both the crowd and the judges with her powerful voice.
When Ant and Dec threw to Simon, 63, he couldn’t say anything and took a gulp of water, pointing to his neck.
Amanda Holden (wearing a light-up dress, of course) then jumped in to stroke his back and confirm he couldn’t say anything at the time – perhaps he swallowed his ever-present chewing gum?
After Bruno Tonioli described her as a “golden belter,” Alesha Dixon said, “I think we should put some perspective on this, here you are, shining composed…” ‘I am really proud of you.’
Amanda then added: ‘You are a shining example for all the women, we haven’t had a female winner for a long time.’
Returning to Simon for remark, the father-of-one requested that the audience hear from Amy Lou about what it meant to her to perform tonight since he’was having problems speaking’.
She then told Simon how she’really’ wanted to win the programme for her children, having recently given birth.
The candidate also revealed that having grown up in ‘small bars,’ performing in front of so many people was a tremendous issue for her.
Amy Lou competes against other finalists such as adolescent magician Cillian O’Connor, dancer Lilliana Clifton, opera vocalist Malakai Bayoh, aerial act Duo Odyssey, and bookies’ pick dancer Musa Motha.
