Sherlock has been on the air for six years, but co-creator Mark Gatiss has hinted that there may be more to come.
The BBC crime drama aired four seasons from 2010 to 2017, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson.
Millions of admirers watched the TV version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s great novel on a daily basis and, understandably, were left wanting more.
Fortunately, they are not alone, since Mark, 56, has hinted that a transfer would be “the logical thing to do.”
‘We would love to make a Sherlock movie,’ The League of Gentleman actor asserted.
However, he did warn that filmmaking was more complex than audiences believe, saying: ‘People think you can just wave a wand. It’s incredibly difficult to get people interested and get films made.’
The Dracula star continued to The Guardian: ‘I remember talking to Edgar Wright about Ant-Man, into which he put eight years of his life and then didn’t make.
‘Eight years is not short of a decade. Add a few of those up, you’re dead and you’ve made four films.
‘But, also, we were genuinely interested in making them for TV because we love TV.’
Steven Moffat, his co-creator, has already stated his desire to resurrect Sherlock, saying he would bring it back ‘tomorrow’ if Benedict and Martin were available.
The former Doctor Who showrunner said: ‘Look, I’ll start writing tomorrow if Benedict and Martin will show up, frankly.’
He then jokingly added: ‘Sadly, they’re on to bigger and better things, and left us behind crying, but Benedict and Martin, please come back?’
Marvel star Beneditct also revealed he hadn’t ruled out donning Sherlock’s long coat with turned-up collar once again either in a TV appearance in 2022.
‘I don’t know, you know. I like to say never say never. I don’t know many of us that have come out and said, “No, it’s a done thing”, he said on Lorraine.
Since Sherlock debuted, the actor has been cast as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has been nominated for two best actor awards: in 2015 for his work as Alan Turing in The Imitation Game and last year for his performance in Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog.
Meanwhile, Martin has joined him in the MCU as Everett Ross in the Black Panther flicks.
In Peter Jackson’s trilogy of films based on JRR Tolkein’s The Hobbit, he also portrayed the starring character of Bilbo Baggins.
Sherlock is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
