John Barrowman burst into tears during a live Sky interview shortly after he and his husband Scott Gil saw a car plough into a crowd of people in Berlin.
One person was killed and around 30 others have been injured after the incident, in a popular shopping district in Berlin, where John and Scott were.
Berlin police spokesman Martin Dams said the incident happened near the popular Kurfuerstendamm shopping boulevard in the west of the German capital, while Berlin police said on Twitter: ‘A man is believed to have driven into a group of people. It is not yet known whether it was an accident or a deliberate act.’
Recalling the incident, during which John had taken to Twitter to post live from the scene, John said: ‘It’s just I’ve never seen anything like the carnage like that before.
‘We were walking back to the hotel and I said to Scott, “Did you ever think we’d be in the middle of something like that?” It’s quite awful.’
The actor added: ‘We’re both fine, just quite shocked. I’ve never seen a dead body lying in the middle of the street ever.
‘I’m sorry but to see people hurt and innocent in senseless destruction by whoever’s caused this, a horrible, horrible person and these people were just having breakfast at a cafe, it’s just awful, a vicious, vicious, vicious thing to do.’
Recalling the scene and the quick response from emergency services during the ‘chaos’, John said: ‘The poor person who was in the middle of the street was just left there.’
He continued: ‘It was chaos when we realised that, when we thought the car was just an accident, when we started walking up the street we saw more cordoned off tape, and I said to Scott, “Something is wrong,” and they’d cordoned off other junctions, the scale was getting bigger and bigger so I then immediately called my mum and dad to let them know I was okay.’
Moments after the incident, John had posted a clip to Twitter, saying: ‘It’s really pretty bad guys.
‘Over where we are here, there’s a lot of police, a dead body in the middle of the road.’
The star noted he was told to stand behind a tree, ‘just in case anything else happens because it’s something that’s between us and any other vehicles that may come’.
John went on to describe what he saw, explaining: ‘If I’m pointing to you from the road, up there, the car came down onto the pavement, we had dinner in that restaurant last night, the car came down onto the pavement and has some onto the road over there, has hit somebody and then has gone down the road and has come back onto the pavement down that way, and come back onto the pavement and gone through a bunch of people, gone through the photograph I posted of a cafe and right into a storefront window.’
In another clip, John explained he’d been moved ‘all the way down from the incident’, with helicopters coming in to assist the injured.
He said: ‘This is bad… there are hundreds of emergency services in the area. They’re blocking off city block after city block off and keeps expanding. We’re being pushed back and out.
