Season 2 of Shadow and Bone has been released on Netflix, and it follows Alina (Jessie Mei Li) as she explores her burgeoning skills as the legendary Sun Summoner.
Yet, a few fans couldn’t help but complain about one aspect of the show… making the identical criticism as was made against Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
Some fans had difficulty seeing what was on screen while viewing the new episodes of the fantasy series based on the novels of author Leigh Bardugo owing to the darkness prevalent in several of the scenes.
The term “shadow” is actually in the title of the programme, and crucial sequences were certain to take place in the Fold – a vast storm of darkness generated by the Darkling (Ben Barnes) that includes horrible creatures and divides Ravka in half.
Nonetheless, one disgruntled person tweeted: ‘Why did they make this show so dark. I’ve got curtains closed, can still barely see it.’
‘Can Netflix turn the brightness up on their sets tho why’s every scene so dark on every show,’ someone else requested.
Another person distracted by the lighting wrote: ‘Why the are the night scenes in #ShadowAndBone so DARK. I CAN’T SEE.’
Meanwhile, one viewer made a different observation about the dark scenes, stating: ‘Is it me or #ShadowAndBone Season 2 dark scenes keep flickering. Can’t concentrate. It’s annoying.’
There were also concerns about the severe darkness in periods when Game of Thrones was still showing, prior to its season eight conclusion in 2019.
A number of viewers struggled to follow the tale during an episode titled The Long Night because they couldn’t see what was going on.
The same issue occurred following the launch of the prequel spin-off series House of the Dragon, with one Twitter user questioning: ‘Why every episode does #HouseOfTheDragon have me straining my eyes at this dark screen?’
In response to complaints over a scene in episode seven of House of the Dragon, HBO said in a statement published online: ‘We appreciate you reaching out about a night scene in House of the Dragon: Episode 7 appearing dark on your screen. The dimmed lighting of this scene was an intentional creative decision.’
Shadow and Bone seasons 1 and 2 are available to watch on Netflix.
