The release of Secret Invasion episode 1 on Disney Plus has created interest and excitement among Marvel fans all around the world, as the story continues the Skrulls’ takeover of Earth.
However, the admission that the TV series’ opening titles were made using AI (artificial intelligence) has enraged many, with some vehemently claiming that it has taken work away from actual artists.
The opening credits display a kaleidoscopic blend of whirling colours as green – representing the extraterrestrial Skrull race’ green skin – combines with society on Earth.
In an interview, executive producer Ali Selim, who directed all six episodes of the show, stated why he thought Method Studios’ usage of AI suited with the Secret Invasion plot.
‘When we reached out to the AI vendors, that was part of it — it just came right out of the shape-shifting, Skrull world identity, you know? Who did this? Who is this?’ he told Polygon.
‘We would chat to them about concepts and themes and phrases, and then the computer would go out and make something,’ Ali explained of how the opening titles were made. Then we could tweak it little with words, and it would change.’
This is the new #SecretInvasion title sequence…
Big studios are taking a clear stance on AI issues for artists by using exploitative and morally very questionable AI tools for their current productions.
It is disgusting. 🧵1/ pic.twitter.com/m4O1RnP09s— David Blatt (@KOPF_STOFF) June 21, 2023
According to the producer, using AI in this manner “felt explorative and inevitable, and thrilling, and unusual.”
Method Studios has previously worked on projects such as Eternals, Loki, Wonder Woman 1984, and Birds of Prey.
Method Studios did not react to a request for comment on how the scene was developed, according to the outlet.
Illustrator and concept artist David Blatt shared the opening titles clip on Twitter, writing: ‘This is the new #SecretInvasion title sequence…

Someone else described the decision as ‘shatteringly depressing’, with there being real-life artists who would ‘happily kill to do an intro for a major Disney Plus television show’.
A lot of people will rave about how good #SecretInvasion is but, this show marks the first major invasion of AI on a major studio’s piece of work, it’s utterly horrifying to think about and this is only the start.
Think about all the amazing intros created by REAL HUMANS!!! pic.twitter.com/WLRAyR9kM5

There's something shatteringly depressing about Marvel using an AI to do SECRET INVASION opening credits art when their company wouldn't exist without artists who would quite happily kill to do an intro for a major Disney+ television show

I really loved the first episode of secret invasion but them using AI “art” for their intro is just wack
Do better Marvel pic.twitter.com/BCjOWA3xNt

AI has been infiltrating several aspects of life recently, including the music business.
Sir Paul McCartney stated earlier this month that a ‘last’ Beatles song using the late John Lennon’s vocals will be published, with artificial intelligence being utilised to reproduce his voice.
AI was able to ‘extract’ the singer’s voice from old demos and complete the previously unfinished tune, which will be published this year.
Secret Invasion is available to watch on Disney Plus with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
