Sarah Michelle Gellar has marked Buffy Anne Summers’ 40th birthday with an impassioned message to the slayer’s fan base.

Buffy was more than just a teenage vampire killer, she was the epitome of empowerment for a generation when she saved the world, juggled a love life and survived high school.

Like many of us, it came as a huge shock to Gellar when she realised The Chosen One turned 40-years-old on January 19, 2021.

While the star hasn’t plunged a stake into creatures of the night for almost 18 years, Gellar still carries the teachings of Buffy with her to this day.

Celebrating the milestone birthday on Instagram yesterday, alongside a photo of Buffy aiming a crossbow, she wrote: I just realized that today is Buffy Summers 40 bday. I can’t even believe that.

‘She taught that the hardest thing in the world is to live in it. So in her honor let’s all be brave. Live.

‘This may not be the way we are used to living our lives, but let’s find the beauty. So we can all live long and safely.’

Buffy The Vampire Slayer ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003 and also sparked the successful spin-off, Angel, starring David Boreanaz as Buffy’s vampire boyfriend.

New generations are discovering the action-drama, and it still hits for children coming through today – including Gellar’s, who finally got around to bingeing the series in lockdown.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer is available to stream on All 4.
