Salma Hayek divulged information about her impending part in the next season of Black Mirror, admitting that it tested her limits.
The 56-year-old actress will play herself in an episode titled Joan is Awful in the sixth season of the dystopian thriller series.
Despite appearing in the highly anticipated film under her own name, the teaser for the show’s comeback previewed a slew of entirely new looks for the Magic Mike’s Last Dance actress.
Salma addressed out about her new acting job ahead of the June 15 release date, saying it pushed her beyond what she thought was acceptable.
The Hollywood celebrity was eager to join Charlie Brooker’s project, which he described as “absurd” and “a lot of fun.”
She said: ‘It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play an interpretation of myself.’
‘I got to explore the conceptions and clichés people had about me and be self-deprecating,’ Salma said to Radio Times.
‘It’s as if I created an alter ego where I could do the most disgusting, grotesque things that you would never do in real life… and have permission to do that.
‘It’s been surreal, and I think only a mind like Charlie Brooker’s could have come up with such a concept.
‘There are so many moments that shocked me in the script. There is one huge one that I had to come to terms with, and made me ask myself, “Do I really want to do this? Am I going to get in trouble?”‘
‘An average woman [played by Schitt’s Creek actress Annie Murphy] is stunned to discover a global streaming platform has launched a prestige TV drama adaptation of her life — in which she is portrayed by Hollywood A-lister Salma Hayek,’ read the synopsis for Salma’s episode.
In other news, the show’s creator pondered on his casting of Salma, noting that she was a wonderful fit for the upcoming installment.
Charlie explained: ‘Thankfully, Salma Hayek signed up to play Salma Hayek because who else will play Salma Hayek?
‘We had a Zoom call with her, and I was nervous because I had just sent a script with her name in it, asking her to play herself.
‘But she loved it and started encouraging us to do all this stuff that I would never have dared write into the first draft of the script.’
Black Mirror season six returns to Netflix on June 15.
