Rock Till We Drop is the new show that proves you’re never too old to follow your dreams.
The Channel 5 talent competition sees contenders aged 65 and over fight to win a position in a band and perform at the Isle of Wight Festival.
Judges Martin Kemp and Lady Leshurr will be scouting out the older musicians to form two rock bands, beginning with a hunt for a lead singer.
The four-part series will feature pensioners auditioning for the rock band as well as appearances from the judges’ celebrity friends, including Fleur East.
And who better to lead the teams than the bassist of Spandau Ballet and the award-winning British rapper behind freestyles series Queen’s Speech?
Who is Martin Kemp?
Although he was the bassist of 80s band Spandau Ballet, Martin Kemp may be now better known for his iconic role of EastEnders villain Steve Owen.
The 60-year-old actor, musician and director has also starred in The Krays, Birds Of A Feather and McDonald & Dodds.
He came third on the tenth series of Celebrity Big Brother and judged alongside Dannii Minogue on Let It Shine.
Who are Spandau Ballet?
Inspired by London’s post-punk underground dance scene, Spandau Ballet began as a club band before becoming one of the most successful British groups of the 80s, selling 25 million albums and having 23 hit singles worldwide.
The band was made of Gary Kemp (Martin’s older brother) on guitar, synthesiser and backing vocals, Martin on bass, vocalist Tony Hadley, saxophonist Steve Norman and drummer John Keeble. Gary was also the band’s songwriter.
The band is best-known for the 1983 hit True, although fans will remember their other chart toppers including Gold and Through The Barricades.
Who are Martin Kemp’s children?
Martin wasn’t the only celebrity in the iconic family, as he has been married to Shirlie Holliman since 1988.
Shirlie is a former backing singer of Wham! and one half of the pop duo Pepsie & Shirlie.
The pair met through mutual friend George Michael, and released their first ever duet album in 2019.
Martin and Shirlie have a daughter, Harley Moon, 32, and son Roman Kemp, 29.
While Harley Moon is a photographer, filmmaker and songwriter, Roman is a breakfast show presenter on Capital FM, and has made celebrity appearances on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and First Dates.
Speaking about the new BBC Two show, Martin said: ‘I’ve been involved in music and bands since I was 16 years old, from a school punk band called The Defects, playing to just a few friends in small pubs and clubs, to Spandau Ballet enjoying every second of the sheer overwhelming thrill of walking out onto a festival stage in front of 50,000 fans!
‘I can’t wait to share that experience with the lucky few who make it into my band… who for whatever reason, their rock dreams didn’t quite happen. I’m so excited to give them a chance of a lifetime to make those dreams come true!’
Rock Till We Drop airs tonight at 9pm on BBC Two.
