Richard Bacon has addressed whether he could fight in the war with Ukraine against Russia, admitting: ‘I don’t think I could do it.’
On Friday’s Good Morning Britain, Richard and co-host Kate Garraway spoke to Cambridge student Nikolai Nizalov, who has returned to his homeland Ukraine to join the fight.
Nikolai, who’s 19 years old, moved from Ukraine to the UK in 2013, previously saying that while his parents ‘obviously didn’t want me to go’, they ‘understood why I wanted to – and I didn’t give them much choice’.
During a discussion about the ongoing conflict, broadcaster Iain Dale questioned if he would have the courage to take up arms in the war, confessing that he personally wasn’t sure.
However, Richard knew where he stood, saying that he couldn’t see himself gearing up for battle.
While speaking to Nikolai via video chat, the student said: ‘In my time spent here, I’ve watched two airstrikes from targeted ballistic rockets in Lviv.’
‘Nikolai, thank you for joining us. All the very best, it’s a remarkable thing you’ve done, it’s unbelievably brave,’ he said.
Richard continued, stating: ‘As Iain said, would we be able to do that ourselves? I think from my point of view, the answer is no. I don’t think I could do it.’
As they wrapped up their conversation with Nikolai, Kate added: ‘The bravery of it is to be absolutely saluted and stay safe.’
Nikolai, who is a natural sciences graduate, will work as a medic and drone operator in a nine-man volunteer unit in Ukraine.
He explained that he’s brought his lectures with him so that he can continue with his university work, adding that he might sit an exam remotely in May.
‘Ideally I’ll come back for second year in October but I’m not going to leave until we win,’ he said.
‘Even if I don’t get a great mark this year I can apply for special permission to get into next year.’
Nikolai is originally from Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine, and is currently living at a friend’s house in the western city of Lviv.
