In a new Channel 4 documentary, Rebekah Vardy makes charges regarding her family’s reaction to suspected sexual assault.
The 41-year-old travels on a personal journey in Rebekah Vardy: Jehovah’s Witnesses and Me, exploring her previous church and chatting with ex-members.
During the episode, Rebekah becomes upset as she recalls a particularly tough incident from her youth.
Rebekah alleges she has been sexually molested from the age of 12. She has previously spoken about being a victim of the crime, but she has never gone into depth regarding the reaction of her family and religious community.
She sought assistance from members of her family and the Jehovah’s Witness society, which resulted in a meeting.
‘It was put to me that I’d misinterpreted the abuse as a form of affection,’ she recalled.
‘It was explained that I could bring shame on my family and was manipulated into believing it wasn’t the best thing to do to take it any further and to take it to the police.’
Rebekah adds that it had a significant influence on her, and she began missing school and making poor decisions as a result. She claims that this caused a collapse in her relationship with her family, which resulted in her fleeing the family home.
‘It’s hard to see how I survived that,’ she shared.
‘It’s not until you have children that you really become furiously protective and yet nobody valued me enough to protect me.
‘My kids are everything,’ she shared before getting teary. Rebekah has children Sofia, nine, Finley, six, and Olivia, four with 36-year-old footballer Jamie Vardy. She also has Megan, 18, and Taylor, 11, from previous relationships.
Rebekah concluded the account by stating: ‘My family chose what they chose over me.’
