Quentin Tarantino says Kanye West did not come up with the idea for Django Unchained, believe it or not.
The Hollywood director was hit with accusations from the rapper this month that he had stolen his idea for the 2012 blockbuster, with Ye saying he had pitched the idea to him as a potential music video for his hit Gold Digger.
Kanye – who is facing intense criticism for an antisemitic post he made on Twitter – had made the claims in an interview with Piers Morgan Uncensored, where he said Quentin had ‘got the idea from me.’
Now the Once Upon A Time In Hollywood director says Kanye did pitch him a ‘movie’ of sorts about a slave, but says he had the idea for Django before he had ever met the musician.
Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Quentin addressed the accusation by saying there is ‘no truth to the idea.’
‘There’s not truth to the idea that Kanye West came up with the idea of Django and then he told that to me, and I go, “Hey, wow, that’s a really great idea. Let me take Kanye’s idea and make Django Unchained out of it.”‘
He added: ‘That didn’t happen,’ explaining he had the idea ‘for a while before I ever met Kanye.’
Quentin did say, however, that Kanye had wanted to make a ‘giant movie’ based on hss College Dropout album, where different directors would do different tracks from the album and it would be released as a feature-length film rather than multiple music videos.
He recalled how Kanye suggested a narrative where Ye would p+’be a slave and he’s singing Gold Digger, and it was very funny. It was a really, really funny idea.’
He said the idea was ‘meant to be ironic,’ but there had been ‘pushback.’
‘But I wish he had done it,’ he said. ‘It sounded really cool. Anyway, that’s what he’s referring to.’
The Yeezy star has sparked fierce criticism over the past few weeks, having recently apologised for his anti-semitic comments after threatening to go ‘Defcon 3 on Jewish people’.
Backlash to his comments was swift, with several companies including Adidas ending their partnerships with him, and him dropping off the Forbes billionaire list.
He is also being sued for £221million over comments made about George Floyd’s death.
