Piers Morgan has not held back in his criticism of those who criticised him at the National Television Awards.
The 58-year-old broadcaster was nominated in the TV interviews category for his work on Talk TV’s Piers Morgan Uncensored.
When he was initially revealed, however, he elicited a strong reaction from the audience, with many hissing and booing him when emcee Joel Dommett singled him out.
Joel, 38, introduced the renowned faces at London’s O2 stadium at the opening of the event, saying, ‘Piers Morgan is here!’
Morgan was then met with boos from the audience.
The host then interjected to add: ‘Hey, everyone, say what you like about Piers Morgan…’
After a brief pause, he moved to introduce Louis Theroux without further word about Morgan, plainly leaving the former GMB host unhappy.
Morgan aired his sentiments on social media after losing his category, and he didn’t pass up the opportunity to knock Joel and the audience down a notch.
‘Got the Tube in searing heat… got mocked by a host I’ve never heard of… got booed by an audience of shrieking banshees… got beaten by Graham bloody Norton… and now getting the first limo I can find to get the hell outta here. Thanks for a great night NTA’S,’ he wrote.
Graham won the TV interviews category for his BBC One conversation programme of the same name.
Morgan did not appear to be optimistic about his prospects of victory prior to the tournament.
‘They’d all rather shoot themselves then give me an award but, but if it’s just on interviews, hard to say that anyone else has had bigger ones that we’ve had in the last year,’ he said.
Speaking about how he might fair in his category, he added: ‘I don’t have any competition.’
Morgan had surprised many earlier in the night when he chose to ride the London Underground rather than a taxi to the event.
‘My first time on the tube for 30+ years. Hasn’t got any cooler has it,’ he shared alongside a photo in a packed carriage.
Beneath his snap, one person exclaimed: ‘What!’ while someone else quipped, ‘First time in 30 years?!!’
Another added: ‘A true man of the people.’
However, his son Spencer poked fun and said it was ‘like seeing a polar bear in the desert’.
The National Television Awards is streaming on ITVX.
