Phillip Schofield offers to pay pensioners £700 energy bill after she admits she ‘can’t eat or sleep’

Phillip Schofield offered to pay a pensioners £700 energy bill after she told him she can’t ‘eat or sleep’.

Martin Lewis appeared on Thursday’s instalment with Phillip and Holly Willoughby to give viewers advice on their money worries.

The first caller was a woman called Patricia who phoned into the show because she received a huge bill from her energy supplier and she wasn’t sure why.

The 73-year-old, who was calling from Norfolk began by explaining her situation to the hosts.

She told them: ‘I have a bill from Together Energy and it was for £701.85. I have never had one like that before ever.’

‘You were paying £45 every month so this has come as a bit of a shock to you, Martin?’ Holly asked.

Martin went on to ask Patricia to give him further details about the bill.

He said: ‘Let me just understand what this bill is Patricia. So when you say you’ve had a bill, you pay by direct debit £45 a month.

‘Is this a bill over and above that £45 or is this saying how much you have used therefore you’ll need to pay more to make up for it?’

Patricia claimed to Martin that the energy company were asking for the money ‘over and above’ what she has already paid.

‘This is a back bill from when you left your old supplier,’ the Martin explained.

‘Were you giving regular metre readings to them?’

To which Patricia replied: ‘No. I don’t know how to do it, I am 73.’

The money expert pointed out to Patricia that she needed to be sending month metre readings to the supplier because everyone ‘it’s something everyone on direct debit should do’.

He told her that she was using more energy than she thought she was, which is why she was landed with the bill.

‘It’s causing me to not eat or sleep,’ Patricia told them.

Phillip chipped in: ‘Don’t do that, don’t do that. Listen if the worst comes to worst, we’ll pay it for you.’

Viewers couldn’t help but feel sorry for Patricia, taking to social media, on tweeted: ‘God love her, hope Patricia sorts her bill out.’

Another said: ‘Poor Patricia, it’s not her fault she can’t read a metre.’

One added: ‘Oh dear Patricia was underpaying all that time.’

This Morning airs daily at 10am on ITV.
