Phillip Schofield believes everyone should cut Prince Harry some slack after his latest travel advert sparked a mixed reaction.
In the comedy sketch, which was released to promote a project to assess travellers on how sustainable they are when they’re on holiday, the Duke of Sussex was filmed going for a run while wearing a ‘Girl Dad’ T-shirt, before being ambushed by ‘rating’ agents.
Although he was promoting an important message alongside actors Rhys Darby, Dave Fane and Rena Owen, Harry’s acting skills divided opinion, with people hailing his performance as ‘cringey.’
During Tuesday’s This Morning, Phillip and co-host Rochelle Humes – who were joined by editors Graeme Brown and Camilla Tominey – shared a brief clip of the promo on the programme, and the presenters discussed the public’s reaction to the skit.
Jumping to Harry’s defence, Rochelle said: ‘I feel like whatever he tries his hand to now, it’s labelled cringey. We’re already of that mindset.’
‘He can’t do anything without people saying, “that’s just rubbish” he’s written off right from the word go,’ Phillip sympathetically added.
‘That’s quite funny, and I don’t think he’s a bad actor.’
According to Travalyst’s website, the ‘partnership’ is ‘led’ by Harry and incorporates Booking.com, Expedia Group, Google, Skyscanner, Trip.com Group, Tripadvisor and Visa.
The non-profit ‘promotes the systemic changes needed in order for sustainable travel to be taken out of the niche, and into the mainstream’.
‘If he does things that seem a bit ill-thought-out, he merits criticism,’ said Camilla.
While Graeme added: ‘He’s not a terrible actor, but I cringed throughout the whole four minutes and 19 seconds of it.’
‘It was so forced, I’m going to say something positive and I’m gonna buy a ‘Girl Dad’ T-shirt,’ he joked.
Elsewhere, Good Morning Britain presenter Richard Madeley also weighed in on the Duke’s ad, and branded the sketch as ‘dreadful.’
He remarked: ‘I think this headline sums it up: “The Oscar for more toe-curling acting goes to Prince Hammy.” It is dreadful, isn’t it? How did they even let that out?!’
