Phillip Schofield didn’t mince his words on This Morning when he confronted a caller who asked for advice about a friend who had been the victim of relationship fraud.
A viewer, using the name Sarah, called in to discuss her friend ‘lying about her relationship’ to her.
However, Sarah revealed her friend had actually been the victim of fraud – she had never met the man and she said he ended up stealing around £27,000 from her.
Jumping in on the advice, Phil said: ‘I think you should be supporting her. She’s lost £27,000, she’s been mortally wounded in love, she’s embarassed and you’re upset because she told you lies.’
Vanessa Feltz added: ‘It’s not about whether she lied to you, I think she just couldn’t bear to come clean about this because she feels like she’s been silly.’
‘She’s your best friend!’ Phil marveled.
Holly Willoughby aadded: ‘I think she is a victim here, of somebody who has scammed her out of an awful lot of money so I think you just need to keep that in the back of your mind and maybe forgive her.’
Sarah responded: ‘I know I need to forgive her and I know I need to be there for her, I’m just struggling – yeah.’
‘You’ve got to occupy the higher ground here – yes she may have lied but look at what’s happened to her,’ Phil added.
Vanessa pointed out: ‘I think she just couldn’t tell the truth, she was too embarrassed and if you understand that, then you can forgive.’
It’s not the first time Phil has weighed in on the segment – he previously consoled a viewer whose religion is ‘very disapproving’ of homosexuality.
The host, who came out as gay on This Morning in 2020, urged the caller to ‘be happy’ and enjoy her new relationship, even if that meant leaving her faith group behind.
