Peter Andre expressed how hard it must be for Michael Owen to watch his daughter Gemma on Love Island.
It’s been a week since the 19-year-old first appeared on the hit ITV2 dating programme, but she’s already got the nation talking about everything from her young age to her ex-boyfriend Jacques O’Neill arriving as a bombshell in Sunday’s episode.
Gemma, a Team GB dressage champion, is yet to name-drop her footballing legend father, Michael Owen, in the villa as her fellow islanders are still seemingly unaware of her famous lineage.
After Gemma was slammed for being ‘rude’ during last Monday’s (June 6) debut, Michael defended his daughter calling her ‘mature’ and highlighting that he was in the public eye at a younger age during his football career.
The Mysterious Girl singer – who shares eldest children Princess and Junior with ex-wife Katie Price – shared his sympathy for the football legend.
‘I have to say I feel every inch of pain Michael Owen must be going through seeing his daughter Gemma on Love Island,’ he said.
‘Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great show but it’s not exactly ideal as a dad, is it?’ he added in his latest column for OK! magazine.
While Gemma made her debut on Love Island, her dad Michael left the country and instead travelled to Germany to commemorate the 2001 Germany v England World Cup qualifier match which saw him score a hat-trick.
‘No wonder he said he’d flown to Germany for football commentating to avoid it,’ Peter quipped.
Michael has previously shared how it’s his ‘worst nightmare’ to see his daughter on Love Island.
Before she had entered the villa, speaking to ITV News, Michael shared: ‘I have no doubts that she will make us all proud.
‘It’s probably a father’s worst nightmare, but whatever she wants to do
you’ve got to be supportive.’
When she first arrived at the villa, Gemma, 19, was coupled up with Liam Llewellyn, who has since left the island.
She later recoupled with Davide Sanclimenti, 27, and is currently coupled up with Luca Bish, 23 – although nothing about their coupling is certain after rugby player Jacques, 23, arrived on the scene.
However, fans and celebrities alike have called for other islanders to have more screen time, and even resulted in Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid asking: ‘Is it Love Island or Gemma Owen Island?’
Love Island returns tonight at 9pm on ITV2.
