Russell T. Davies has stated that Paul O’Grady honestly desired a position on Doctor Who.

On Tuesday, O’Grady died at the age of 67, with many fans and celebrity friends paying homage to an undoubted television and radio star.

Davies was among them, and he disclosed that the comedian and broadcaster offered a job to the Doctor Who showrunner, seeking to feature in the long-running sci-fi epic.

Following the news of O’Grady’s passing, Davies posted a photo of the celebrity on Instagram with the statement, ‘The worst news. What a shining light. What a wonderful dude.

‘He was ferocious in the fight against AIDS; he made everyone love drag; he once asked me if he could be in Doctor Who, “I just want to wear a white coat and carry a clipboard and walk down a corridor saying ‘I think it’s alive, Doctor.’”

‘When asked in 2021 if he despised anyone, he said, “Every single stinking member of this lying, self-serving government.”

‘There will never be anyone like him.’

Linda Thorson, star of The Avengers, spoke on Thursday’s Good Morning Britain and said that O’Grady died in his own bed close to his spouse Andre Portasio.

Portasio announced the news of his husband’s death in a statement on Wednesday, which read: ‘It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening.

‘We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss.

‘He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion.

‘I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years.’
