Lorraine Kelly has expressed her joy and enthusiasm about being a grandma while her daughter is expecting her first child.
Lorraine’s unborn child’s sex has been disclosed by Rosie Smith, whom she shares with husband Steve Smith.
Lorraine was overjoyed to learn last month that their family will be expanding after Rosie, 29, shared a photo of her developing bump on social media.
Her Instagram caption read: ‘We could not be more excited – you’re already so loved little one ’.
Now, in a joint interview, the mother and daughter revealed that Rosie’s baby will be a girl.
They did so with a hilarious gender reveal, ripping open a dog-friendly cake with pink icing for Ruby, a small wire-haired dachshund.
Speaking to Hello! Magazine about the impending arrival in September, Lorraine, 64, said: ‘This is the most exciting thing to happen to our family, well, since Rosie was born.
‘Last night, I felt the baby kick for the first time, which was extraordinary. It made it feel real.’
Lorraine said on Monday’s talk show that she was calling her granddaughter Tallullah Belle, despite the fact that she knew that would not be her name.
Speaking about the impending arrival, she said: ‘I’m calling her that in my head but don’t think she will be called that, but it will be great because we will have my granny, my mum, me, Rosie and the wee tiny baby and we will have to take a photo with that.’
‘She is six months now and is absolutely blooming.’
The daytime TV icon has no issues with being called ‘granny’ either.
Explaining that being a grandparent is something she always ‘really wanted one day’, Lorraine clarified in OK! that she ‘never wanted to put Rosie under any pressure.’
‘My married name is Smith so I’ll be known as Granny Smith, like the apple!’, she added gleefully.
Rosie has struggled with nausea throughout her pregnancy, particularly in the second, third, and fourth months.
Fortunately, she is now feeling much better and is beginning to take things seriously, as evidenced by her thoughts on names.
She initially “really wanted to have a Scottish link” and had a moniker decided for a son, but she has found girls’ names far more difficult to choose.
Whatever happens, she will be supported by her mother, Lorraine, who recently received a Bafta for her long career in broadcasting.
Lorraine had a suspicion Rosie was pregnant before she told her, so call it mother’s intuition.
‘I thought she was looking a wee bit peaky, but I had no idea it was that, so it was the best possible surprise,’ Lorraine said of the news, adding that, of course, she burst into tears upon finding out.
Rosie mentioned that she and her partner, Steve, had discussed ‘a lot’ about starting a family.
‘We both wanted to become parents quite young so that our parents can be around for as much as possible.’
Lorraine and Rosie, born in 1994, have always been very close.
Lorraine previously told Weekend magazine that she and Rosie discuss “anything under the sun” after she moved out of the family home.
‘I’m her mum, though, I’d never say I was her best friend because she’s got her friends already. I’d love to think she tells me everything but she doesn’t.’
Rosie also works in broadcasting, having spent four years studying journalism at Edinburgh Napier University.
In 2023, she appeared on Jeremy Vine’s Channel 5 show to discuss current issues.
She also appeared on Celebrity Gogglebox with her famous mother.
