New ITV drama Our House airs over four nights this week from Monday and boasts Line Of Duty star Martin Compston among its cast.

Based on the book by Louise Candlish, the thriller tells the story of Fiona Lawson (Tuppence Middleton) who arrives home to see another family moving into her home.

The issue is she has no idea who they are – and her house has never been up for sale – so as she struggles to get hold of estranged husband Bram (Compston), it becomes clear the secrets and lies have only just begun.

The nightmare premise led to some tough scenes for its star Compston, who told Metro.co.uk that the drama was ‘the most emotionally difficult I’ve played in a long time’.

Joining the two leads in the cast are Rupert Penry-Jones (The Batman, Whitechapel), Weruche Opia (I May Destroy You) and Buket Komur (Honour), plus another undeniable star of the series is the house of the title – but does it exist?

The house is important in the show in many ways – as a location, a focal point of the plot and a representation of Fi and Bram’s relationship.

As Middleton explained in an interview ahead of the series airing: ‘The house becomes symbolic of the relationship between Fi and Bram, which is slowly eroding. We watch as the things she thought were important to her start to slip away.’

Producer Tom Mullens also revealed that plenty of time was spent on ensuring the house was just right, as befits another major character in the drama, because it had to be ‘real’.

‘We spent a long time searching for the right house. Some houses lacked character or were too ostentatious,’ he said.

‘You have to feel these are real people, who got lucky 15 years ago. They bought their house when it was vaguely affordable, and now it’s worth £2million.’

The drama was filmed from July 2021 until the end of the year, largely around south London after the crew had scoured all parts of the capital for the ‘perfect location’.

Further scenes were filmed at Leysdown-on-Sea, on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, as well as in a studio where an exact replica of inside the house was built.

For those wondering though – yes, the series was also filmed in a real house in Dulwich, overlooking Peckham Rye, which Mullens noted ‘funnily enough’ was ‘not the far from where Louise [Candlish] had imagined the house when she wrote the book’.

Speaking to The Daily Express, he added: ‘It’s about the architecture but it’s an aspirational home but it also feels like a family home which is really important.

‘I guess there’s always other elements you’re looking at like the room dimensions, can you film in there, do you have the right sort of access, but it was this magical double-fronted house which suited the show.

‘And, of course, after that, after we found the house, we could build our sets.’

And those sets, not to shatter the illusion, do encompass most of the downstairs interior of the home.

Our House airs over four nights from Monday, March 7, from 9pm on ITV.
