Nick Hewer has weighed in on the idea of Carol Vorderman returning to Channel 4’s Countdown after Anne Robinson announced her exit earlier this month.
Nick presented the daytime quiz show for nearly a decade before stepping down, which led to Colin Murray temporarily taking the spot.
He was replaced by Anne, 77, who confirmed she would be leaving the programme later this year.
But former The Apprentice aide Nick, 78, admitted he has concerns over the idea of former numbers and letters star Carol, 61, taking over.
He said: ‘I don’t know whether there would be a sort of conflict in a way because both she and Rachel [Riley] did the same job. So I don’t know.
‘I think she’s a very popular woman, but I would have thought that it would slightly confuse the audience, which is a very faithful audience, [with] some people watching it for years and years.
‘I just think that there might be – people might be a bit confused.’
Carol made her name on the show, which she co-hosted for over two decades, until 2008.
One person he is keen on is Dragons’ Den star Steven Bartlett, adding to RadioTimes.com: ‘He’s very popular, a pretty smart guy.’
Carol has already responded to the idea herself, telling fans it would be ‘an honour’ to return to the beloved show.
She wrote on social media: ‘Thank you to all of you saying such lovely things about the possibility of me returning to Countdown. You’re very kind & it would be an honour.’
But the TV star seemed to play down the idea she would actually make a comeback, offering up her well wishes to Anne’s replacement.
She tweeted: ‘but I want to wish whoever is the lucky human to be the new host all the love and 9 letter words in the world [sic].’
It comes after it was reported bosses were keen on a comeback for the former co-host, who remained a fixture for 26 years.
‘Carol is such a big part of Countdown and Channel 4 knows how much everyone loves her.
‘Bosses would love her to come back as the main host, her Countdown journey would come full circle. It would be perfect,’ a show source told The Sun.
Other names in the running from the bookmakers are Richard Osman, Colin Murray and Sandi Toksvig.
However, Richard has already ruled out the idea, after reminding fans the reason he recently quit Pointless – he doesn’t have ‘enough time.’
Countdown airs weekdays from 2.10pm on Channel 4.
