New Zealand is pleading with Europe to approve its desire to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest.

While the country has never been allowed to join due to geographical remoteness, a campaign has been begun to give them a chance.

Yeastie Boys, a Kiwi brewery, is leading the fight and doing all it takes to appeal to the organisers.

So far, the operation has included the publishing of a song and accompanying music video, as well as the creation of a public petition.

Two Hearts, a Kiwi comic pop-duo comprised of Laura Daniel and Joseph Moore, perform the song Eurovusion (Open Up), which laments not getting invited in the first place.

While the opening lyrics describe the country as a “failure,” they recognise that not being a member of the continent has been the decisive factor to yet.

They do, however, point out that Australia has been able to compete for the last nine years.

‘Those guys live so far away but we are just a teeny bit further, so you should just let us into the UK,’ they sing.

They even pledge to bring their own plug adaptors before revealing their fondness for ‘English muffins and Dutch ovens’ and the fact that they have ‘German second cousins’.

‘We’re not bluffing. We’ll be stunning. You’ve got space, you kicked out the Russians,’ they add.

Their engaging track, which might easily fit into the competition, then expresses how disappointing it is to be left out.

‘Like your washing on the line when it starts to rain…we don’t want to be left out. When you’re sitting on the bench when they’re starting the game…we don’t want to be left out. When you’re neighbours are throwing a cool sounding party…we don’t want to be left out,’ the song continues.

‘Oceans may divide us, but you should still invite us, but Europe is still deep inside us…because of the colonisers,’ they also point out.

Their final sell points out that 300 million years ago, the world looked nothing like the one we know.

‘New Zealand and Europe’s not a crazy idea, because we used to be connected. We used to be together in Pangea,’ they remind audiences.

The European Broadcasting Union, which owns and runs the song contest, stated in 2021 that there are no intentions to extend the invitation to New Zealand.

‘There are no plans right now to invite New Zealand to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest…Australia received special permission to participate after airing the contest annually for over 30 years,’ a spokesperson told Seven Sharp.

However, the current request has already received some popular support, with comments on social media in favour of the nation being put to the list.

‘Frankly bloody unfair that a mere accident of continental drift prevents Two Hearts from dominating the greatest musical stage of them all,’ one fan commented on the video.

‘This is excellent. Come to Liverpool immediately. 12 points,’ someone else wrote.

Another added: ‘This is a cause I support wholeheartedly.’

The 2023 Eurovision Song Contest 2023 airs on May 13 on BBC.
