The 14th Doctor was announced today, with Ncuti Gatwa set to take over from Jodie Whittaker when she bows out from Doctor Who later this year.
The Sex Education star, 29, will step into the Time Lord’s shoes from autumn, with Jodie having just one special left to air.
Ncuti will also be pairing up with Russell T Davies, with the showrunner returning to the hit BBC One show.
As Ncuti gears up to make his Doctor Who debut, fans of the long-running sci-fi series are, understandably, reflecting back on Jodie’s time in the TARDIS and feeling excited about what Ncuti will bring to the table.
When did Jodie Whittaker become the Doctor?
Jodie made history as the first female Doctor and joined the show in 2017.
Her role as the 13th Time Lord was publicly announced on July 16 of that year, before she got to work on series 11 of the show.
She has received many positive reviews of her portrayal of the Doctor during her time on the show, with young girls in particular feeling inspired by seeing a woman take the helm.
Jodie took over from Scottish actor Peter Capaldi, who played the 12th Doctor and left after series 10, along with writer Steven Moffat, who was replaced by new showrunner, Chris Chibnall.
The 13th Doctor made her debut in the closing moments of the 2017 Christmas special, Twice Upon a Time, before her first proper episode aired in the New Year.
After regenerating once again, the Doctor fell out of the TARDIS and landed in modern-day Sheffield in the series premiere, with the episode titled The Woman Who Fell to Earth.
During her first episode, Jodie’s Doctor befriended retired bus driver Graham O’Brien (played by Bradley Walsh), his wife’s grandson Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole), and police officer Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill).
The group worked together to successfully fight off an alien hunter from the warlike Stenza race, before the Doctor built a device to return her to the TARDIS, accidentally teleporting her new companions with her.
After the foursome got better acquainted, they went on to retrieve the TARDIS in The Ghost Monument and ended up as travel buddies through space and time.
The Doctor and her new crew visited the likes of Alabama during its segregation era (in the episode named Rosa), where her new friends agreed to being full-time companions.
They later faced terrifying confrontations and Jodie encountered her first Dalek in the series 11 finale, after it was awakened by archaeologists in Sheffield.
Thankfully, the Dalek was defeated and was only a sign of many more victories to come.

Jodie’s first episode aired on October 7, 2018.
It was episode number 277 in the franchise, and was watched by 8.2million viewers overnight, accounting for an audience share of 40.1% during its first broadcast.
