Netflix’s new true crime documentary literally follows man on the run from murder

Netflix’s true crime documentaries are only getting more and more wild, with their newest offering giving us the story of a man on the run from murder.

Running With The Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee will follow the man behind one of the most successful pieces of computer software of all time, McAfee Anti-Virus, after he fled when police sought him for questioning about the murder of his neighbour – and he took a film crew with him.

McAfee was filmed while being pursued by the authorities and, later on in life, ran for President.

So safe to say, the doc, released on August 24, is not going to be a boring watch.

McAfee wrote the first commercial anti-virus software in 1987 and saw huge success with it.

However, he resigned in 1994 and sold his stake in the company.

In 2012, Belize police searched for McAfee as a person of interest in the death of Gregory Faull who, at the time, was McAfee’s neighbour.

McAfee said in an interview at the time with Wired, that he saw the police arrive on his property, and buried himself in the sand outside his home.

‘It was extraordinarily uncomfortable,’ he said.

He added that he thought he would be tortured or killed if he was found by the police, so decided to flee Belize.

He was later arrested in Guatemala for illegally entering the country, and was eventually released and deported to the United States in 2012.

In 2015, McAfee announced a bid for president of the United States, later confirming he would be seeking the bid of the Libertarian party.

He came second in the primaries and ran again in 2020, losing out at the Libertarian National Convention.

In October 2020, McAfee was arrested in Spain on US tax evasion charges.

Less than a year later, in June 2021, he was found dead in his jail cell due to an apparent suicide.

However, McAfee’s wife Janice said she did not believe he had taken his own life and claimed his suicide note was a forgery.
