In Bridgerton, we see Lady Danbury as one of the most influential women in London’s upper classes; in anticipation of the prequel series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, Netflix has released a photo of her as a young woman.
Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) has given viewers of the period drama a glimpse behind the scenes of the tonne during the social season, when the young men and women of the aristocracy and gentry are presented for marriage consideration.
She may be an expert on the subject, but everyone has to start somewhere; in the prequel series coming out later this year, we’ll get a glimpse inside her formative years.
Now when we have our first glimpse at her, we see that she is standing outdoors, slightly nervous as she faces someone, and is therefore not the confident and self-assured woman we know her to be.
This scene, from episode six of the current season, also captures her in an extravagant gown and jewellery.
Her name is Agatha, but she has always been known as Lady Danbury in Bridgerton. The show will reveal her background in addition to that of the monarch.
Writers have already hinted at parts of her story by saying that Agatha is “stuck with a sharp understanding of the once-divided social scene and the complexities of marriage” and will become a “guiding light” for Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio) while also finding her own voice and power.
After getting married to a much older man, she will use her friend’s rise to the throne to make her own way in society.
Arsema Thomas, who just graduated from The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and also has degrees in Biological Sciences and a Masters in Public Health from Carnegie Mellon University and Yale University, will play Agatha.
The Queen Charlotte series will be about how the Queen “rose to prominence and power” and how her marriage to King George “started both a great love story and a change in society.”
Along with Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury, the new series will show how Lady Violet Bridgerton (Connie Jenkins-Greig) came to be. Andoh, Golda Rosheuvel, and Ruth Gemmell, who played the characters in Bridgeton, will also be back in their roles.
This year, fans of the franchise will also get the third season of Bridgerton, which will focus on Luke Newton’s character Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan).
Bridgerton is streaming on Netflix.
