Netflix fans are loving this hack to find more true crime documentaries after typing in a secret code

Netflix fans have found a little ‘hack’ which has really changed how easy it is to find the next thing to watch.

Especially for true crime fans.

Instead of searching and scouring the genre, or putting a title which often leads to some unhelpful results, Netflix users have spotted a little code which narrows down the search.

In a TikTok clip which has since gone viral, one user explains: ‘Netflix hack for all you crime bingers. Search 9875. Every single crime documentary. Thank me later’.

And just like that, lists of true crime documentaries and dramas are available, categorised by Top Results, Ominous, Serial Killer, Ripped from the Headlines, and so on.

So next time you’re on the search for an Unsolved Mystery or you’ve already binged Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, there’s plenty more available to find.

The little code includes the likes of Making A Murderer and Abducted in Plain Sight, as well as Kristen Bell’s The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window.

According to Netflix, the secret category codes existed in the ‘earliest days’ of the streaming company, and now reaches a whopping 36,000.

Mary Bertone, from Netflix’s Curation and Taxonomy team, said: ‘These codes date back to the days when Netflix was still in its DVDs-only phase.

‘At the time, Netflix.com had a public-facing genre tree that linked out to all the various types of films and TV series, each of which has its own specific ID code.

‘A fan scraped the genre tree for all the codes, shared the list online, and people have been using those codes (along with the thousands more that have been added since) to this day.’

And the codes can get pretty niche too with 81614959 holding the key to Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, and 81271205 leading to a Human Connections genre, inspired by the pandemic.

‘Game changer,’ one viewer wrote, while another penned: ‘Brb watching all these.’

Someone else joked: ‘Oh so u want me to be traumatized.’

Other viewers seemed to have noticed a flaw though, with one writing: ‘There were a few.. I mean you could say it worked if Peppa Pig, Mamma Mia and Friends were crime movies though.’

And that’s not the only hack, as other viewers took to the comments to help fellow fans out with other genre codes.
