Netflix has released the trailer for Pray Away, a brand new documentary exploring the ‘awful, pseudo psychology’ of gay conversion therapy.
The upcoming film focuses on the dramatic journeys of former conversion therapy leaders, current members, and a survivor, and chronicles the ‘ex-gay’ movement’s rise to power, its unscientific influence, and its legacy of profound harm.
From executive producers Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum, and director Kristine Stolakis, Pray Away goes back to the 1970s where five men are struggling with being gay in their Evangelical church.
As a result, they started a Bible study to help each other leave the ‘homosexual lifestyle’. They quickly received over 25,000 letters from people asking for help and formalised as Exodus International, the largest and most controversial conversion therapy organisation in the world.
But leaders struggled with a secret: their own ‘same-sex attractions’ never went away. After years as superstars in the religious right, many of these men and women have come out as LGBTQ+, disavowing the very movement they helped start.

In one powerful moment from the trailer, one of the men says: ‘We’re killing ourselves by not embracing who God created us to be.’
While another cried: ‘A voice inside me said, “How can you do this to your own people?”‘
The release of Pray Away’s teaser clip has sparked curiosity among many, with one person writing: ‘I cannot wait to see this.
‘I was raised catholic and all hell broke loose when I came out. I’ve never met a fellow LGBT who wanted to reject their own self, so I’m curious to see how these people thought.’
Echoing a similar sentiment, another added: ‘I have literal goosebumps from the trailer alone. This documentary is going to be a rollercoaster of emotions…’
This certainly won’t be a documentary to miss.
Pray Away launches on August 3 on Netflix.
