Mrs Brown’s Boys’ Brendan O’Carroll speaks out over shock cast member exit

Mrs Brown’s Boys’ Brendan O’Carroll has spoken out over claims Gary Hollywood left the series after falling out with the family cast.

The series is due to return for the Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas special this Christmas day, with the team dealing with coronavirus in a way only they can.

But Gary, who played hairdresser Dino Doyle on the sitcom, will be missing after leaving the series in October, allegedly over a pay dispute with the creators.

But actor and show creator Brendan, who has worked with Gary for more than 20 years, insists that this isn’t the case at all.

Speaking ahead of the latest Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas special, Brendan told Dublin Live: ‘Some people claimed Gary left because of a row over money but it wasn’t true.

‘They didn’t know the full story and it was amicable.’

‘I got a lot of abuse over it on social media but I let it go over my head,’ he continued. ‘He decided he wanted to follow his own star and we are delighted for him.’

Brendan – who plays foul-mouthed matriarch Agnes on the series – went on to explain that Scottish actor Gary and his wife Cherylanne had moved to Spain for a new life.

The series is made up largely of the O’Carroll family, with Brendan’s wife Jennifer Gibney playing Agnes’ long-suffering daughter, Cathy.

His sister, Eilish, plays daft next door neighbour Winnie, and Brendan’s son Danny O’Carroll plays the Buster, who has somewhat adopted the Brown family as his own.

Danny’s son Jamie has also joined the fold as Mrs Brown’s grandson, Bono.

Last year, his youngest grandson became the latest member of the series.

Mrs Brown’s Boys returns Christmas Day at 10pm on BBC One.
