The winning bidder of the original Mr. Blobby costume on eBay paid a whopping £62,000 for the legendary (though unsettling) ensemble.

The worn suit had its maiden television appearance with Noel Edmonds on his BBC One Saturday night variety show Noel’s House Party earlier this month.

Mr. Blobby has been a staple of British pop culture for the past three decades, initially being voiced by Barry Killerby (who remained in the role until 2015) and then by Paul Denson (who has continued in the role until the current day).

The vendor claimed in the listing that the costume was manufactured by the BBC’s costume supplier for an international version of Noel’s House Party, and last week it was revealed that bids had topped £60,000.

‘Unfortunately before it could be delivered the overseas show was cancelled and neither the broadcaster or the BBC’s production team wanted it – so it sat in my office until a move meant it came home with me some years ago.’

They also noted that the ‘inevitable deterioration of the foam and the rubberised covering’ was owing to the ensemble being over 25 years old.

They described how the plastic eye was fractured, the bow tie needed to be fastened, and the two limbs needed to be reattached to the torso.

Although there were 178 bids, it finally went to a single, persistent buyer on Thursday, January 26 for £62,101.

According to the vendor, the outfit is “just for personal home display usage” since Mr. Blobby is a trademarked figure protected by copyright.

‘Unauthorized uses include, but are not limited to, renting, lending, displaying, or performing the work in public. It will be necessary for the buyer to sign an agreement to this effect, and the item will have to be picked up in Hertfordshire following purchase.’

They were selling just the outfit, so they added, “there is no voice speaker included in this deal.”

Photos showed Mr. Blobby’s outfit on the floor, the boots leaning against a wall, the large plastic eyeball cracked apart, and what seems to be stains around the lips were also featured.
