Mother of God! Bizarre moment Line of Duty’s Ted Hastings dragged into PMQs as Boris Johnson insists he’s ‘rooting out bent coppers’

In the mother of all crossovers to happen this week, Ted Hastings and AC-12 were name-dropped in today’s Prime Minister’s Questions, with Sir Keir Starmer calling on the Line of Duty character to ‘get to the bottom’ of ‘government Sleaze’.

It’s an unexpected mention that has shaken social media users, who were delighted and perhaps a little perplexed to hear the BBC character used so casually in the chamber.

Addressing MPs on Wednesday, the Labour leader claimed the ‘Greensill scandal is just the tip of the iceberg’ when it comes to the Tory Government – along with ‘dodgy contracts, privileged access, and jobs for mates’.

He added that Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s inquiry into David Cameron’s lobbying activities for former financial firm Greensill Capital may not look ‘at very much at all’.

When suggesting a solution, however, it seemed Sir Keir had Line of Duty on his mind.

‘The more I listen to the Prime Minister the more I think that Ted Hastings and AC-12 are needed to get to the bottom of this one.’

Mother of God…

Can Ted get to the bottom of this? (Picture: BBC)

Taking to the microphone, Mr Johnson picked up on the BBC reference, sharing his rebuttal: ‘That why we’re putting in an independent review, that’s why we have tougher laws on lobbying…yes we are getting on with rooting out bent coppers.’

We’re not sure what we’re more entertained by, Ted Hastings, a fictional character, being name-dropped in PMQs, or the responses from punters tickled by the mention.

Me: *Tries hard not to think about #LineofDuty* “I’ll just watch Prime ministers questions to take my mind of LODâ€
*Keir Starmer mentions Ted Hastings and AC-12*
Me: Oh come on Fella! It’s everywhere I turn! 🙈😂

BBC’s Michael Cowan asked: ‘Is this Ted Hastings first outing in Parliament?’ while Sky’s Adam Boulton insisted: ‘Mother of God #LineOfDuty is fiction Chaps!’

Another mused alongside the clip: ‘I’m interested in one thing & one thing only & thats Keir Starmer name dropping Ted Hastings in parliament today.’

Still, not everyone found it entertaining, with one writing on Twitter: ‘I like Keir Starmer but jumping on the #LineOfDuty bandwagon makes him seem like a bit of a t**t.’

Line of Duty returns 9pm Sunday on BBC One.
