Miriam Margolyes has apologised for making a remark to Matthew Perry during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show.
The 82-year-old Harry Potter actress appeared on the iconic BBC programme opposite the 54-year-old Friends star, and one of the series’ most memorable moments was when she stunned the audience by saying she had never seen an episode of the American comedy.
Miriam jokingly described meeting Sir Lawrence Olivier and feeling so awestruck that she’started to cream in my underwear’ – making the Chandler Bing star quite ‘uncomfortable.’
However, in the latest set of quotes from Oh Miriam: Stories from an Extraordinary Life, she revealed her guilt after asking whether Matthew ‘was an alcoholic.’
As reported by The Independent, Miriam wrote:’ Matthew was expecting a bland conversation that stayed on the surface of things, but I was warming to my theme and immediately launched in, burrowing deeper.’
‘On reflection, I really wish I hadn’t,’ said Miriam, adding this was one of the few times she ‘didn’t quite mesh’ with another guest on a chat show’.
When marketing his 2022 memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Matthew described his long battle with substance misuse, which began in the 1990s.
In one interview, he informed US TV reporter Diane Sawyer that he had attended hundreds of Alcoholics Anonymous sessions.
over the hour-long interview, he also revealed that his weight fluctuated over his years on Friends due to his habits at the time.
Between 1997 and 2001, Matthew gained and lost numerous pounds, and he has admitted in subsequent years that he cannot recall recording several episodes of the famous sitcom.
Miriam also alleged in her biography that former co-star Steve Martin attacked her with a phoney punch on the set of the 1986 film Little Shop of Horrors.
Only Murders in the Building actor Steve insisted he used ‘extreme caution.’
