Miley Cyrus has just made Black Mirror a little too real for us, and we’re not sure what to think.
The Flowers hitmaker, 30, starred in a 2019 episode of Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too, a dark, twisting anthology series.
Miley had no idea that her real-life house was on fire when she was portraying tortured popstar Ashley O, who was handcuffed to a stretcher and drugged by her manager (and aunt) in the series.
But it gets stranger.
The Hannah Montana star was in South Africa filming the series when California was hit by the 2018 Woolsey fire, which burned numerous buildings on her home turf, including hers.
Miley has now said, as part of her Used to Be Young TikTok series, that this particular incident had some strange consequences. Almost like something out of Black Mirror.
She described how the fire, and her exact location on the set of Black Mirror at the time, played out in an uneasy vision years later.
‘Like probably two or three years later, after this happened, I didn’t understand, but I would have this anxiety attack with a vision attached – that I would be strapped down to a gurney. So I would have these dreams any time I would go to perform,’ she said.
‘I thought that was just an anxious vision that made no sense, but actually, as my house was burning down, I was strapped to a gurney with my hands locked in handcuffs, strapped to a bed.’
Fans were stunned, with one pointing out that there is some Black Mirror-ception going on.
‘It was like she had a Black Mirror episode inside of a Black Mirror episode 🥺,’ wrote one fan.
‘The body knows,’ wrote another, while someone else chimed in with: ‘That is such a specific trauma. I’m so sorry.’
At the time, Miley shared her home with husband Liam Hemsworth.
‘I am one of the lucky ones,’ the singer declared on hearing the tragic news. ‘My animals and LOVE OF MY LIFE made it out safely & that’s all that matters right now.
‘My house no longer stands but the memories shared with family & friends stand strong. I am grateful for all I have left.’
Meanwhile, the Hunger Games actor shared an ominous photo of the burnt ruins on X (Twitter at the time), with only a sign stating ‘love’ remaining.
He wrote: ‘It’s been a heartbreaking few days. This is what’s left of my house. Love. Many people in Malibu and surrounding areas in California have lost their homes also and my heart goes out to everyone who was affected by these fires.’
The couple divorced after only eight months of marriage in 2019, following a few on-again, off-again years in which they were even engaged in 2012 before parting for the first time four years later.
Miley afterwards revealed a music video in which she sings her Black Mirror character Ashley O’s song On A Roll.
Although this was a fan favourite at the time, Miley does not remember it warmly.
‘I found out that my house had burnt to the ground. This was the next day,’ she said, hitting play on the music video. ‘The show must go on.’
