The sixth season of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror, starring Aaron Paul, Salma Hayek, and Annie Murphy, has finally arrived on Netflix.
The dark comedy has returned after a four-year hiatus with five gripping episodes: Joan is Awful, Loch Henry, Beyond the Sea, Mazey Day, and Demon 79.
Jodie Whittaker, Letitia Wright, and even Miley Cyrus have appeared in previous seasons.
But who is in the cast for this season? Everything you need to know is right here…
Joan Is Awful
The synopsis for this first episode of this season reads: ‘An average woman is stunned to discover a global streaming platform has launched a prestige TV drama adaptation of her life — in which she’s portrayed by Hollywood A-lister Salma Hayek Pinault.’
Charlie, the showrunner, has revealed where his ideas for this episode came from, telling Metro.co.uk exclusively that part of the tale was inspired by Elizabeth Holmes’ historic scandal.
Annie, from Schitt’s Creek, plays Joan, while Salma, from Magic Mike, plays herself as TV Joan.
The cast also includes Scott Pilgrim actor Michael Cera as Beppe, and Kayla Lorette as another version of Joan.
Meanwhile, The Walking Dead actor Avi Nash plays Joan’s fiancé Krish, with Station Eleven and EastEnders actor Himesh Patel playing the Streamberry version.
Catastrophe star Rob Delaney plays Joan’s ex-boyfriend Mac, with Prince Caspian actor Ben Barnes playing his Streamberry counterpart.
Loch Henry
Loch Henry follows a young couple who start working on a documentary in a sleepy Scottish town before they find themselves ‘drawn to a juicy local story involving shocking events of the past’.
Film student Davis, played by Samuel Blenkin, uncovers dark secrets about his own parents, leaving his girlfriend Pia, played by Myha’la Herrold, vulnerable as she solves a mystery during their documentary making.
Samuel has starred in the likes of The Witcher: Blood Origin and played Scorpius Malfor in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on stage, while Myha’la is known for her work in Industry and Bodies Bodies Bodies.
They’re joined by Scotsmen Daniel Portman, who plays Stuart, and John Hannah, who plays Stuart’s dad, while Appropriate Adult actress Monica Dolan plays Davis’ mother Janet.
Beyond the Sea
Beyond the Sea takes set in a ‘alternative 1969’, when two men have journeyed to out of space to embark on a ‘perilous high-tech mission’.
Meanwhile, digital replicas of them stay on Earth with their families, but when a terrible tragedy strikes one of their lives on the planet, the implications lead to even more catastrophic outcomes.
Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad plays astronaut Cliff Stanfield, who has a wife and children on Earth, played by Lana Stanfield from House of Cards.
Josh Hartnett’s character David Ross is also aboard the space expedition, and he has a wife and family back on Earth, played by Jessica Ross, until horrifying acts by Rory Culkin’s character Kappa make David wonder whether he will ever return.
Mazey Day
The penultimate episode of this season follows ‘a troubled starlet [who] is dogged by invasive paparazzi while dealing with the consequences of a hit-and-run accident’.
Playing the titular role is I Am Mother actress Clara Rugaard, a troubled celebrity whose world turns upside down after a hit-and-run accident as she checks in to a ‘rehab’ to avoid paparazzi discovering her horror secret.
Zazie Beetz plays one of the obnoxious paparazzi, Bo, who is torn by her decision to pursue celebrities while simultaneously attempting to make ends meet.
The Atlanta actress is joined by Danny Ramirez, who portrays another paparazzi, Hector, in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Demon 79
The season six finale of Black Mirror takes place in Northern England in 1979.
A modest sales clerk discovers a talisman, which motivates her to commit atrocities in the hope of averting a nuclear apocalypse and saving the world.
Anjana Vasan portrays Nida, a lady enduring social and political problems before doing horrific deeds in response to Paapa Essiedu’s character Gaap’s plea to rescue the world.
The I May Destroy You actor takes on extraordinary shape, having been inspired by a member of Boney M, who is clothed fully in white with feathers.
Vicky, a sales assistant, is played by Katherine Rose Morley, while Michael Smart, a conservative politician, is played by David Shields from The Crown.
Black Mirror is available to watch on Netflix.
