Maya Jama befuddles viewers with shocking remark over Love Island star on Aftersun

After joking about an islander’s “time of the month” in reaction to the star being in a “mood,” Maya Jama surprised several Love Island followers.

The host of the reality dating programme was joined in the studio by past contestants Olivia Attwood and Indiyah Polack, as well as Made in Chelsea’s Sam Thompson, to discuss the most recent drama from the island on Sunday night’s sister show Love Island: Aftersun.

The discussion regarding Ella Thomas and Tyrique Hyde, who became boyfriend and girlfriend before to the finale and dropped the L bomb, was the first topic discussed by the panel.

The pair had a little argument on the most recent episode of the ITV2 show, which was discussed on Aftersun.

Olivia, who was on Love Island in 2017 and just wed footballer Bradley Dack, expressed the opinion that conflicts are inevitable in relationships, especially when people have been residing in such close quarters for such a long period.

‘I think that is just being in a relationship. It’s a long time to spend with that person, and I think they’re probably getting cabin fever, they’re ready to get out,’ she said.

The 32-year-old then added: ‘And I think he just needs to let her have her moods. You don’t need to make it about you. Girls are moody – that’s our thing.’

Maya, 28, then chimed in to add: ‘We get moods. I was like, maybe it’s the time of the month. Maybe she just doesn’t want to see him, because every day for two months is a long time.’

Several viewers picked up on the presenter’s quip about it potentially being ‘Ella’s time of the month’… and they weren’t happy about it.

‘Why did Maya say time of the month lol ew,’ one person tweeted, while another wrote: ‘Okay Maya saying maybe it’s Ella’s time of the month on Aftersun is NOT it.’

Someone else stated: ‘Erm… Did Maya just say Ella might be in a mood because it’s “that time of the month” internalised misogyny is alive and well!’

Sam, 30, complimented Ella and Tyrique for “offering everything” he would have expected from a Love Island pair despite their many ups and downs after Olivia and Maya finished speaking.

The reality star then added: ‘I don’t like the way she always has to apologise at the end. She doesn’t need to apologise – she’s awesome.’

Tonight, the Love Island finale will see one couple crowned the winners, as Ella and Tyrique, Whitney Adebayo and Lochan Nowacki, Sammy Root and Jess Harding, and Molly Marsh and Zachariah Noble vie for the top prize.

The Love Island final airs tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
