Martina Navratilova has spoken out about her path to ‘cancer-freedom,’ revealing that she had chemotherapy in the same hospital as tennis rival Chris Evert did earlier this year.
Martina, 66, found an enlarged lymph node in December and declared a month later that she had throat and breast cancer.
Martina believed she wouldn’t see another Christmas, but she revealed last week that she is fully free of the condition.
After being diagnosed with cancer herself in November 2021, her tennis opponent Chris was one of the persons who helped her get through it.
Martina would wind up on the same ward as Chris, getting treated by the same nurses, and finally rang the same bell to signal the end of her treatment.
‘The parallels are unbelievable,’ Martina said on last nights episode of Piers Morgan: Uncensored, while commenting on the similar paths their lives have taken, from the tennis courts to chemotherapy.
And Chris’ support has clearly been invaluable, as Martina said: ‘Chris has been a stalwart, she has supported me so much through all of this.
‘I supported her a year ago, little did I know it was going to be reciprocated in this manner.’
When Martina’s agent asked her friends to give her music to lift her spirits while she was undergoing chemotherapy, Chris gave her Bill Withers’ “Lean On Me.”
Fittingly, the song goes: ‘Lean on me / When you’re not strong / And I’ll be your friend / I’ll help you carry on / For it won’t be long / Till I’m gonna need somebody to lean on’.
Martina also said that she recently re-wore a necklace Chris gave her after having to remove it for radiation.
When Chris got sick, she didn’t take the necklace off once, according to the tennis legend.
‘I was like, “I’m not going to take this off until she gets well”,’ recalled Martina.
On their relationship, Martina sweetly concluded: ‘We still depended on each other, we made each other better.
‘We were always there for each other no matter what.’
Piers Morgan: Uncensored is on TalkTV every weeknight at 8pm.
