Martin Compston has provided solid proof that new Line of Duty is on the way.
The identity of the mystery antagonist ‘H’ was revealed at the end of the latest season of the blockbuster BBC police drama, which premiered in 2012. Jed Mercurio, the creator, even replied to criticism on Twitter.
Compston, who portrays DS Steve Arnott, has disclosed that the primary cast maintains an ongoing WhatsApp conversation with showrunner and writer Mercurio.
And the name of the WhatsApp group has changed: ‘We have a chat group called “Line of Duty 6,” which Jed recently changed to “Line of Duty 7.”
Speaking on his own comedy podcast, Restless Natives, Compston continued: ‘What I love about it is we have never spoken about it since.
‘We have had such a good run with it and a bit of you does go “Let’s walk away on a high”, but we all want to work together again because we are so close.’
He continued: ‘We wouldn’t do it just for the sake of it. It would have to add to the series, it would have to make the series better.’
The season six finale was seen by an estimated 16.44 million people, making it one of the highest TV audiences recorded during the Covid epidemic.
It was stated at the time that the police thriller was one of the most viewed drama series of the whole twenty-first century, just ahead of A Touch of Frost
In response to fan comments following the season six finale, Mercurio defended the programme and called out those who were disappointed.
‘We realised that attempting to investigate the true nature of corruption in our society would not be appealing to everyone, but we genuinely thank you everyone for watching. It has been our honour.’
The stars of the sitcom reconnected last month when Vicky McClure married.
