Ella Morgan Clark, the show’s first trans competitor, became tearful with her fellow brides in a touching moment on Married at First Sight.
She explained, through tears, that she had a horrible family life and upbringing, however she did not reveal why.
‘I purposefully didn’t want to respond [about family] and I realise I’m sounding cryptic now, but there was a period when my life wasn’t so simple and we weren’t the family that we are today,’ Ella revealed to her fellow candidates.
‘I think the word family is important to me.’
The 29-year-old confessed to the audience that she was transgender and told her tale of coming out in her voice over.
She said: ‘When I was about 14 my mum came to my room, she sat on my bed with me and she asked me if I wanted to be a girl and I said “No mum I am a girl”.
‘I was born in the wrong body, my parents actually gave birth to a little boy called Evan but I’ve transitioned into Ella who I am now and who I have always been.’
The clinic consultant from Weston-Super-Mare received an outpouring of sympathy online, with viewers moved by her heartfelt presentation.
One viewer wrote: ‘Ella looks amazing what a brave woman.’
Another said: ‘Ella seems so sweet. Everybody in this world deserves love. Everybody. If you don’t have space in your heart for that, keep it to yourself maybe? This takes bravery.’
‘Awwww Ella.🥺 Bless her,’ shared a third viewer, while a fourth added: ‘Loving Ella already.’
The bride-to-be continued: ‘My family is amazing, it’s not been easy – my parents struggled, they didn’t understand it in the beginning but nor did I.
‘They have accepted me and we have an amazing relationship, we have an unbreakable bond and that’s why I’ve got so much love for them.’
Despite her openness to viewers, Ella chose not to reveal her transformation with the other brides just yet.
She vowed to be’more honest’ later, but she wanted to inform her husband first since she felt she ‘owed it’ to him.
Ella had anticipated controversy when she joined up, telling Lorraine, “I knew I would get a lot of backlash and a lot of hate as the first transgender person.”
‘And I’ve always battled with classifying myself as a trans person because it may create embarrassment, and I’m happy to have my family, but it has showed me the bad side.’
According to a show spokesman, Ella’s transgender status was disclosed to the husband prior to the wedding.
‘In this specific instance, with Ella’s permission, the groom was made aware his bride was trans, to ensure full, informed consent before entering the experiment,’ they said.
MAFS UK airs at 9pm on E4, Monday through Thursdays.
