Anna Friel has detailed how a family tragedy helped her with the heartbreaking PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) storyline in Marcella.
Series three of the ITV drama returns to our screens tonight and will see Anna’s character Marcella taking on a new identity.
The last we saw of troubled Marcella was when she went to throw herself off a building before her colleague Rav Sangha (Ray Panthaki) came to the rescue.
After she confessed to Rav about her dead daughter Juliette, Marcella then attacked him and left him handcuffed to a toilet cubicle before faking her own death.
The theme of series one and two, not only centres around Marcella catching murderers, but it focuses on the detective’s constant blackouts, which are triggered by the trauma of her baby daughter dying.
Speaking about how she took on such a powerful storyline, Anna told Metro.co.uk and other press: ‘I did a lot of research. There was family tragedy in our family, with someone very close to me.
‘There was a loss of the baby full term and I saw it happen with my own eyes so it was very very important that I represented that in truth.’
‘So many people suffer from PTSD snd I have friends who have suffered for years who didn’t know they were suffering from it,’ she added.
Series three of Marcella will see a brand new cast, but one familiar face returning is Rav – who soon realises that his former colleague is not dead.
The new eight-part series will see Marcella in Belfast as an undercover detective.
As she inhabits the new character of Kiera, Marcella sets her sights on focusing upon the Maguire family’s criminal operations.
However, as she investigates their activities, questions start to arise about how much she’s embraced the Keira personality and left Marcella behind.
But, will Rav blow her cover?
Marcella begins tonight at 9pm on ITV.
