Now that we know who will represent the United Kingdom in the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, it’s time to listen to her song… and it’s already been branded a ‘banger’.
The major announcement occurred on Thursday’s BBC Radio 2 Morning Show with Zoë Ball, when Rylan Clark joined Zoe to introduce Mae Muller as the UK’s next act for the competition.
Mae, 25, said it was’surreal’ to be picked before her song I Wrote A Song was broadcast on the radio.
The song, which was released last month, has a colourful music video that includes dancing routines, a variety of settings, and a range of dazzling costumes… offering just a taste of what Eurovision fans can anticipate from the singer’s forthcoming performance in Liverpool, as she follows in the footsteps of Sam Ryder.
Many Twitter users exclaimed over the earworm that is I Wrote A Song after their first listen.
‘This is a Eurovision banger!!!!!!!! Go Mae!!!!!!!!!!’ one person exclaimed, as another wrote: ‘Love it! I needed an upbeat pop banger and here it is.’
‘Congratulations!!!! Catchy rhythm. We all feel like dancing to it,’ someone else said, while another expressed their view that it sounded ‘very TikTok friendly’, a surefire way to gain thousands, if not millions, of fans on social media.
‘Tuuuunnnee. Very catchy,’ one person summarised, while someone else compared Mae’s song to the other artists taking part.
‘Eurovision is full of rock/techno/alternative songs this year. A catchy pop banger like this will stand out. Really pleased with our entry,’ they wrote.
Mae has been keeping her Eurovision participation a secret over the past two months… So she’s understandably overjoyed to be able to share her joyful news with everyone.
‘I’m SO excited to participate in Eurovision this year and represent the UK! I’ve loved watching Eurovision all my life, so to compete in such a massive music competition is simply brilliant. I’m a huge fan of so many artists that have found success at Eurovision, from ABBA to Måneskin!’ she said.
‘Sam Ryder was amazing last year and proved the UK can be back on the left-hand side of the leader board! I wrote the song I Wrote A Song a few months ago when I was going through a hard time and wanted to feel empowered about relationships, so for it to be chosen for this year’s UK Eurovision song is honestly a dream!’
Mae was chosen following a ‘intensive search,’ and has already received nominations for the MTV EMAs and VMAs in 2022.
On Spotify, her music has been listened over 2 billion times, and she has 5.5 million monthly listeners.
