Following months of speculation, waiting, and great expectation, the UK’s entry for the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest has been revealed: Mae Muller!
The revelation was made on Zoe Ball‘s BBC Radio 2 Morning Show on Thursday, March 9, with presenter Rylan Clark joining in the fun.
The major unveiling of the UK’s act comes as tickets for the Liverpool-based competition went on sale this week, with fans clamouring to get onto Ticketmaster to secure seats for the live semi-finals and grand final.
The bulk of this year’s Eurovision candidates, as well as the songs they’ll be playing when the show begins, have already been unveiled.
Before the UK’s legislation was formally revealed to the public, it was alleged that the decision on who would follow in Sam Ryder’s footsteps had been leaked.
Mae said on Radio 2 with Zoe and Rylan that she had knew she would be representing the UK for two months.
Her competition song is named I Wrote A Song, and it will be her debut solo release in 2023.
‘This is the most weird thing,’ Mae remarked on the radio, while Rylan added that he believes Eurovision fans would be unable to stop hearing the song in their brains after hearing it.
Zoe also said that Mae was born in the same year that the United Kingdom last won Eurovision, in 1997.
However, Mae said that past competitor Sam sent her some voicenotes with some hints on what she might expect the day before she was confirmed for the tournament.
‘Mae has a tremendous talent, and there is little doubt that she will do the country proud and perhaps duplicate the success and joy that Sam brought to last year’s tournament,’ a source told the Daily Mail ahead of the formal announcement.
‘A lot of time and effort has gone into picking the best singer for the job, she might not be a household name yet and of course the people who selected her are expecting people to ask who she is but they think the nation will love her, as will those across Europe.’
Mae has collaborated with a diverse range of musicians, including rapper Aitch and DJ Sigala, as well as playing as a support act for Little Mix.
She was a youngster when she appeared in the music video for Mika’s song Grace Kelly in 2007, and she released her debut studio album, Chapter 1, in 2019.
That same year, she backed Little Mix on their LM5: The Tour before embarking on her first national tour.
Mae has achieved huge levels of success on streaming with her music, with her 2022 track I Just Came To Dance being streamed on Spotify more than 2.5million times as of March 2023.
